Why You Should Microchip Your Pet
What are Microchips?
Microchips are implantable computer chips. This is an electronic identification method. The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Micro-chipping is a simple, safe, and fast procedure. The chip is implanted subcutaneously between the shoulder blades and the back of your pet’s neck. Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner. They work by receiving a radio signal from the scanner and transmitting the encoded chip identification number back to the scanner. The microchip number is recorded on a microchip database registry with details about the pet’s guardian.
Why should I microchip my Pet?
A pet guardian shouldn’t have to go through the episode of losing a pet by theft or a pet going missing. Studies have shown that millions of pets go missing and some are stolen every year. With the advancement of technology, the concept of micro-chipping one’s pet has too many benefits for it to be ignored. They include:
- The wellbeing of the Pet: Micro-chipping your pet ensures that if one’s pet is stolen, it can be easily scanned and returned to the guardian. Without the chip, the pet may never be found; it might even end up dead.
- Guardianship Proof: This is proof that the pet belongs to you. Since information about the guardian is found on the microchip.
- Permanent Means of Identification: Unlike the tags on a collar that easily fades, or needs renewal, the microchip is a permanent means of identification. It is done once in the lifetime of a pet.
- Security at Home: Some doggie door manufacturers offer doggie-doors that recognize your dog’s chip and automatically opens the doggie door only for them. This keeps wild animals and others out of your home.
- Peace of mind for the pet guardian: Micro-chipping one’s pet gives the pet guardian some level of peace of mind, knowing that the pet can be found if anything happens.
